Why Do We Need Unity?

Bear in mind, a lot of the divisivness on this blog, and many other blogs, yes Daily Kos included, is the work of trolls. Yes, we are all familiar with the most blatant ones, but many are much more subtle.

The one big hope the republicans have for this November is to keep us divided. They have no other real hope. They can't win on the issues. They can't scare enough people anymore. They can't get this election into the theft zone, because they can't get it close enough.. Their only hope is to keep us fighting each other. They get shaky at the thought that we will unite our two powerful forces, each of which would beat them handily, but together we shatter them.

So don't be surprised if they bring out all their forces in every arena to make sure we stay divided.

They would like to make our lack of unity the centerpiece of their campaign. They would like to put it before the American people that we can't unite our own house, so how could we unite the nation. They would like to say that a party that can't unite itself, cant provide the leadership to solve the economic problems of this nation. They would like to say that such a party can't solve the problem of Iraq, or keep us safe.

We need unity as a party. We need unity to win this election. It may be trite to say, but together, we are strong, and together, we can't be stopped.

So beware of any posts and/or posters looking to foment discord. Yes, continue to boost your candidate, but let's be civil, even as we still disagree, and the final shots are still to be fired. Just remember, soon we will have a truce, and we will be one, and soon the real fight will be on.

So many of need decent healthcare and we really need the Obama camp to recognize this. It is not a joke. We are trying to get you to see that this is a life or death situation for SO MANY Americans. Its NOT negotiable. Obama-care as it currently is proposed wont do it. It will make healthcare more expensive for everybody by going halfway. By eliminating risk-based pricing WITHOUT a mandate, Obama will, in one fell swoop, make healtcare much more expensive for everybody without making it affordable for the people who need it. They will raise rates across the board. That will make even less people buy it. Is that the intent?
We need a mandate. We NEED a premium cap.

Can't you see you politicians and healthcare lobbyists are destroying lives AND THIS COUNTRY. If we wanted the feudal system, we would have voted for one. We don't. We CAN'T

Okay, I've been on this site for a long time, and I've seen a lot of references to "tip jars." What is a tip jar? How do they work?

Tip jars are a way for the diarist to make a few extra bucks--ok just kidding. I always have thought of it as a way for people to show their agreement or appreciation with the diarists work. The diarist posts a comment, calling for possible tips and the tips are handed out by giving the diarist a positive rating for the tip jar comment.

My brother the republican, gets off on going to blogs, IRC, etc. and posing as something he is not and stirring the shiza. He really, really gets off on it because on some level he feels it makes him powerful. I doubt that my brother is unique in this sense.

Good point. I can imagine a good many neo-con trolls trying to stir up anger on both sides. Dont fall for it. Not this year. Democrats standing together this year are unstopple. We would have 2 branches with influence on who gets on the third branch. Base your decision on the issues. Not on what a faceless name says on a message board for gods sake.

Everything on the internet is not as it seems. After all isnt everyone on the internet beautiful?

Ok, I understand your disappointment. Now I ask you to understand the pride that those 91% must feel to finally have a candidate they can identify with, and feel pride towards. Many of them probably thought they would never, in their lifetimes, see a black candidate, who could actually become the democratic nominee, and may even become the President of the United States. Think what that must mean to black children now growing up, and how it can positively effect their lives.

Maybe in 25 years or 50 years, it will be so matter of fact to have black candiates running for President, that it won't have to be such a big deal anymore, but until then I am not surprised at all that Barack Obama pulls 91% of the black vote even up against a candidate who has been held in very high regard in the black community.

because I've seen a lot of slamming about the women who vote for Hillary because of that.

Of course I can understand that, I am a Hillary supporter. Feel free to check my diary and comment history to verify it. There is a lot of pride on both sides, and a lot of good people on both sides; that's why this is taking so long. However in the end there can only be one winner, it's like that in any competitive contest. Well, at least, those that can't end in ties. Nevertheless in the the end we are all one family, so in reality, to some extent, we all have won, and we all have lost. But let's never take our eyes off of why we were in this thing to begin with, and that was to win the White House.

the AA vote or was it by that proportion? If just by receiving votes from one community in that high proportion is being divisive, then hasn't every Democrat been divisive since the 1960's?

Engels I don't think you are part of our we, but we (as in the Democratic party with Clinton and Obama supporters) still very much exist. And will destroy your candidate McCain. I'm confused. Just a few comments up you were agreeing with the diarist, and feeling the need to give him/her "10-2 ratings". Now here you are actually doing divisiveness by saying a poster is a troll, a republican, and that his candidate is McCain. so, which is it? United or divided?

I hesitated rating your comments because I was unsure, based on your comments, whether you really mean what you say. Please think a little more before you accuse someone of being a troll, republican and supporting McCain.

Oh, and sometimes comments are HR for no reason but spite and disagreement. Some of this posters comments have been hidden for that. So before you jeer at that, again, you might want to think first.

Just b/c I want unity within the party does not mean I'm going to lie down and let people like engels abuse people in our effort to unify the party. He/she disparaged the idea of our party uniting and pushing for progressive policies and insulted the diarist. I'm going to ignore that. I am entirely sure based on his/her comments and history that engels has no desire, but to divide the Democratic Party and hurt whichever of our candidates faces John McCain in the Fall. If you have a TU status read his/her hidden comments, they are vicious anc cruel.

Please. This poster engages in blatant ratings abuse - look at his history. He has never, ever given a rating other than "one". He is a regular contributer to the hidden comment for good reason. He is a verifiable, certifiable troll. And yet, he still has the ability to rec and rate on this site, despite his constant personal attacks, racist statements and ratings abuse. Why?

I fully agree.

The Republican party is in absolute freefall, and they know it. They could easily be thinking their only prayer to hold onto the Presidency at this point is to try to get a wedge into the Dem party constituencies. I guarantee you, every time someone says, "If X wins, I'll vote for McCain", some Republican operative gets their wings.

I'm almost sorry to be an Obama supporter here, because it would be a lot easier to advocate unity as a Clinton supporter, but it's true. We can't win without each other. Clinton supporters - and quite possibly Clinton herself - are absolutely essential to victory in November, even if Obama is the nominee.

and I hope many read it! May I just suggest that we have not grown beyond the place where we can see unity. Right now, unity means "my candidate", come with me!

We all want to beat McCain. We are not unified on how to do that, and with whom. We may not be until all the votes are in at the convention.

We owe it to our nation to make sure we get 2008 right.

Unity goes beyond much of what we discuss here (2.00 / 3)

Making the party stronger goes beyond the personalities of the candidates and our gut reactions to them.

It goes way beyond the individual who will be in the Oval Office.

I think, if we play our cards right, we could have a congressional wave that could top '06 - which went well beyond most of our hopes.

And if we get a Dem in the Oval Office - Clinton, Obama, whatever, it will take away any excuse for some of the Democratic wimps and peelegs in Congress for not moving us forward.

You are absolutely correct, the potential for dramatic gains in the house and senate are real. We can pick up another 30 seats in the house. Heck we already picked up 3 and we hardly broke a sweat. And each day it seems like we discover another republican senate seat in play. I've lost count, it has to be 6 or 7 pickups at least, and some of those pickup seats are already firmly in our column. And we shouldn't forget that with a dem in the WH, we can stop the bleeding in the Supreme Court, and begin to reverse the conservative advantage that presently exists.

Yes, we have a lot to look forward too, and the only way we can let it slip away is to remain divided.
